Popularly known as South Gujarat University, Veer Narmad South Gujarat University Surat is a state-level university located in Surat, established in 1965. VNSGU Surat is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and a member of the Association of Indian Universities, and accredited by NAAC with Grade 'A'.
According to the university website, VNSGU Surat envisions contributing to the region's higher education keeping in mind the larger goals of building a well-educated nation. The University commits to providing the highest standards of education through undergraduate and postgraduate courses, promoting research facilities, and undertaking extensive activities to reach the different sections of society.
The University has 200 acres of sprawling campus that accommodate modern facilities to provide a holistic educational environment for the faculty members and students.

Certain course-specific entrance exams are conducted by VNSGU Surat itself. Admission to MBBS programmes is based on scores obtained in the NEET UG exam, followed by a counselling round held by the university.
The university conducts Fine Arts Entrance Test and Interior Design Entrance Test to grant admission to the courses. Applicants wishing to seek admission in B.Lib. I.Sc and BPT, B.Optom, Nursing courses have to avail of the entrance test conducted by the university.
For the PG courses, admission to MBA & MD or MS programs are based on scores obtained in CMAT, and NEET PG marks, respectively. Admission to MSc programme courses is determined by the marks obtained in bachelor’s degree followed by counselling round. Admissions to Nursing, M.Optom, MPT, MSW and medical courses are based on the scores obtained in the entrance exam conducted by VNSGU Surat.
Candidates for M. Phil and PhD courses also have written a test conducted by the university followed by viva voce and powerpoint representation. Candidates holding valid scores in JRP/ NET/ GATE/ SLET/ GSLET are exempted from writing the entrance test.

- Hostels: The university provides excellent accommodation facilities for boys and girls on the university campus. There are six separate hostels, each for boys and girls. - Sports facilities: The world-class sports infrastructure of the university is capable of holding national/ international tournaments. The campus has a hockey ground with Astro-pitch, an athletic zone with a synthetic track of 400 meters, indoor swimming pools and a boxing ring.
